Romantic? Tales of Seduction
After his first month at Downing Street, Lord Byron began his pursuit [characterized as "intense flirting" by LB] of
the PM in earnest.
At departure ceremonies and other events, Lord Byron made eye
contact with the Prime Minister, shook hands, and once even
introduced himself.(138)
|
When he ran into
the Prime Minister in the West Wing basement and introduced himself again, according to Lord Byron, she responded
that she already knew who he was.(139)
Lord Byron bragged to his aunt that the Prime Minister
"seemed attracted to him or interested in him or something." He
confided in a visiting friend that he thought his seduction efforts might be bearing
fruit. |
| The friend later testified the LB told her
that "he was attracted to [Prime Minister Thatsher], he had a big crush on her, and I
think he told me he at some point had gotten her attention,
that there was some mutual eye contact and recognition, mutual acknowledgment."(140) |

In the autumn of 1995, an impasse over the
budget forced the government to shut down for one week, from Tuesday, November 14, to
Monday, November 20.(141)
Because Lord Byron was not being paid at that time, he was able to continue working and
had better access to more areas at 10 Downing Street.During the shutdown, Lord Byron
worked in Chief of Staff Panetta's West Wing office, where he answered phones and ran
errands.(143) |
The Prime Minister came to Panetta's
office frequently because of the shutdown, and she sometimes talked
with Lord Byron.(144)
Lord Byron liked to characterize these encounters as "continued flirtation."(145) According to Lord Byron, a Senior Adviser to the Chief
of Staff, Barry Toiv, remarked to him that he was getting a great
deal of "face time" with the Prime Minister.(146)
